Turkey has resumed electricity supplies to Iraq after a three-year break. This was announced by the head of the Turkish Ministry of Energy Alparslan Bayraktar, Day.Az reports with reference to TASS.
“We have resumed electricity exports to our neighbor Iraq, with whom we will contribute to the prosperity and peace of our region through the implementation of the Development Path project. With investments in this project, we will create an “energy path,” the Turkish minister wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
According to TRT Haber, about 300 MW of electricity will be supplied to Iraq via an existing 400 kW power line in Turkey. Iraq plans to import 500 MW of electricity from Turkey.
An agreement on its supply was reached during the visit of Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan to Baghdad in April. At the same time, an agreement was signed on the implementation of the logistics project “Path of Development”.
In late May 2023, Iraqi authorities announced the launch of an initiative that could significantly facilitate the exchange of goods between Asia and Europe. According to the plans, the main transport routes will be tied to the port of Fao. As part of the “Development Path”, it is necessary to modernize and build over 1.2 thousand kilometers of railways, connected with expressways that will connect Iraq with neighboring countries. The cost of the project is estimated at approximately $ 17 billion.
