French law enforcement agencies have recorded an increase in crimes, including assaults and thefts, near Olympic venues in the Ile-de-France region.

As reported by Day.Az with reference to TASS, the statistical service (SSMSI) of the French Ministry of Internal Affairs reported this on its website.

The report covers the period from July 15 to July 21 and compares it with the previous week. It does not provide exact figures on the number of crimes committed.

According to the document, the number of insults to government officials and attacks on them in these areas increased by 20% compared to the previous week. The number of violent thefts also increased by 12%, fights were 11% more frequent. Cases of drug use were recorded 3% more often.

At the same time, the number of non-violent thefts decreased slightly (by 2%), thefts from apartments were 5% less frequent, and thefts from cars were 1% less frequent. However, outside the areas adjacent to the Olympic venues, car-related thefts, on the contrary, occurred 8% more frequently. The report emphasizes that these figures are not final and may be revised later, since complaints are not always filed immediately after the crimes are committed.

The Paris Police Prefecture, for its part, published statistics for the first half of 2024, in which it notes an “unprecedented decline” in crime. Allegedly, violent acts have become 3% less frequent, while robberies and burglaries have decreased by 8% in total. Thefts in transport have become 11.2% less frequent since the beginning of the year. It is noted that increased police and gendarmerie patrols deployed on the streets of Paris ahead of the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games, scheduled for July 26, have become a “deterrent”.
