One of the oldest and tallest plane trees in the coastal area, the one at the junction of Kountouriotis and D. Filosofou streets, was cut down and removed yesterday, causing grief to those who, for decades, cooled off in its shade.
About 14 plane trees were removed this year from the lakeside area, Nissi, Amphithea and Perama, as they were affected by the metachromatic ulcer disease.
Cutting down the particular tree, which was dry and could create safety issues, required the crews of three contractors and the use of a crane to manage to cut the branches and trunk into smaller pieces in order to remove them.
The Green Service of the Municipality also attended the work, with the deputy mayor Petros Palascha noting the sad picture, which is however a one-way street, since there is no cure for the plane tree disease. “The positive thing is that we haven’t found any more sick people so far and I hope we won’t have to cut down any more trees. But this is also a matter of luck”, noted Mr. Palaschas, drawing the attention of the project contractors in the lakeside area, so that they take care of the disinfection and cleaning of the tools and machines.
