Russia has been on the side of the Assad government in the Syrian civil war, but recently there have been speculations that Moscow could become a mediator in Damascus’ relations with Ankara, which supported the rebels in the civil war and fought against the Syrian Kurds.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has ruled out that the three leaders could meet to try to normalize relations between Ankara and Damascus.
“Now we have come to the point that as soon as Bashar al-Assad takes a step towards improving relations with Turkey, we will show him the same approach,” Erdogan said.
Erdogan has signaled for some time that he might renegotiate ties with Assad as the Turkish government works to ensure the safe and voluntary return of Syrian refugees from Turkey to Syria.
Turkey has repeatedly invaded Syria since 2016, mainly fighting against Syrian Kurdish armed groups.
In northern Syria, Turkey and the Syrian rebel groups it supports still control two broad swaths of territory along the border.
