Spouses may decide to share the pension rights they earned during their marriage as partners. This process is known as split pension. This option is also available for widows and widowers. Whoever agrees to share the pension has already said about the widow’s or wife’s pension in return. It is therefore important to decide whether a split pension or a widow’s pension is more suitable for a couple. That doesn’t sound that complex, but it is. Whether pension splitting is necessary depends on each case. “We recommend that people interested in splitting their pensions seek advice in advance,” says Katja Braubach from the German Pensions Association.
