One of the most influential Mexican drug lords and a key figure in the “Sinaloa” cartel – Ismael Sambada, known by the nickname El Mayo, was arrested in the American border city of El Paso, Texas, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.
US Attorney General Merrick Garland announced his arrest last night, along with Joaquin Guzman Lopez, son of Sambada’s former partner and notorious cartel leader Joaquin Guzman Loera – El Chapo.
According to Mexican media, both surrendered voluntarily.
The US Drug Enforcement Administration had announced a reward of up to $15 million for information leading to the arrest of the 76-year-old Sambada. He faces multiple charges in the US, including manufacturing cocaine, heroin, methamphetamines and fentanyl, as well as murder and money laundering.
El Mayo and Guzmán López joined a growing list of leaders of the Sinaloa cartel and related groups that the US Department of Justice is prosecuting, Garland said.
Another son of El Chapo – Ovidio Guzmán – was extradited from Mexico to the United States in September last year.
El Chapo was sentenced to life in prison in the United States in 2019.
