A video clip that spread on Instagram showed activists releasing worms and cockroaches at the residence of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, at the Watergate Hotel in Washington, in protest against his visit to the United States of America.
The video raised questions about how protesters who claimed to have released the insects on Wednesday were able to reach the hotel while the area was under tight security, according to the Washington Post.
The video, posted by the Palestinian Youth Movement on Instagram, shows swarms of cockroaches, insects and worms on a table inside a room where an American and Israeli flags were placed, in addition to floors in another place.
The movement says it did so “so that Netanyahu and his delegation would not enjoy peace while they continue to terrorize” the Palestinian people.
“Worms were left on their banquet tables, cockroaches were released on several floors of the hotel. Fire alarms were activated for over 30 minutes on several floors to ensure no discomfort,” she added.
Netanyahu is scheduled to address both houses of Congress on Wednesday, and is scheduled to meet with President Biden on Thursday and former President Donald Trump on Friday.
A spokesman for the Washington, D.C., Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department said in a statement that the agency had inspectors and firefighters stationed at the hotel where Netanyahu was staying “at the request of the Secret Service,” and that after the alarm went off, fire officials “determined that there was no fire emergency and any fire department response was canceled.”
Netanyahu’s office did not respond to a request for comment from the newspaper.
