Murals in the San Miguel Petapa Cemetery: artists filled the streets with art and color
A group of artists They filled the streets with art and color painting murals in the San Miguel Petapa CemeteryThis project brought together the talents of five talented Guatemalans who painted works inspired by the municipality and its distinctive details. For this reason, iconic figures such as parrots and petates can be seen.
With the purpose of supporting artistic projects and enriching the streets with culture and art, this project, carried out in collaboration with the Municipality of San Miguel Petapa, has borne its first fruits with the completion of the murals that beautify the exterior walls of the municipal cemetery. Located on 1st Avenue 0-10 in Zone 11, this space now offers a visual attraction that invites passersby to enjoy a walk full of color and beauty, ideal for taking photographs and admiring local artistic talent.
The artists behind the murals
The artists who participated in the creation of these murals are Susy Oliva (@susy_oliv), Antony Laparra (@Antoni_laparra), Vanessa Peña (@Pinturas.momos), Hibrido (@_50.100) and Seint (@oneseint). Each of them contributed their unique style and vision to bring the cemetery walls to life.
In one of her murals, Susy Oliva depicted a craftsman working on a mat, accompanied by a farmer plowing the land with the help of an animal. The scene, framed by cacti and a blue sky, evokes the connection with the land and local traditions. In another work, Oliva portrayed the faces of two people fused with mountains during a sunset, surrounded by flowers. This image is inspired by the natural landscape of the La Cerra Ecological Park.
Antony Laparra painted a mural that shows a section of the earth’s surface and what lies beneath it from a unique perspective, accompanied by flowers and a central door. In another of his works, Laparra included a parrot, a Moor and a part of the municipality’s church, highlighting representative elements of San Miguel Petapa.
Vanessa Peña made a colorful mural with the name of the municipality, as well as a figure that fuses a Moor with a banana plant and the phrase “Here are my joys, my sorrows and my pacayas… There is Petapa!”. Another of her works shows a van, capturing the daily life of the place with an artistic touch.
Hibrido’s mural features a parrot resting on flowers, while Seint portrayed a girl against a green background, with details characteristic of graffiti art.
More projects to rescue public spaces
The Municipal Cemetery is just the beginning of other projects aimed at beautifying and rescuing public spaces through art. Soon, another mural will be created in front of the park in the central part of the municipality.
The Municipality of San Miguel Petapa invites artists interested in participating in these projects to contact the Youth Department. The collaboration between artists and the municipality allows them to contribute their talent, while the municipality provides the necessary materials so that the streets are filled with art and culture.
