Parliamentary diplomacy is now essential on the international scene to contribute to the resolution of crises, particularly in terms of strengthening concrete measures and intensifying efforts to combat climate change, he stressed in a speech at a high-level event of COP28.
He added that during the second session of the PAM Economic Forum for the Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf region in Marrakech, which Morocco will host in June next year, the parliamentary bloc of the Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf region for the development of renewable energies, which was established at the PAM in 2022, will be established.
The PAM President highlighted, in this regard, the current climate emergency and its unprecedented repercussions on the Euro-Mediterranean region and the Gulf, citing in particular the rise in temperatures in the Mediterranean by 20% faster than the global average, while the Gulf Sea is the warmest in the world.
After welcoming the decision to activate the “Losses and Damages” Fund to compensate the countries most affected by climate change, the President of the House of Councillors called for intensifying efforts and increasing the funding allocated to the climate and energy transition.
It should be recalled that during another meeting held within the framework of COP28, Mr. Mayara had stressed Morocco’s determination to work to contribute effectively to the continental dynamic aimed at protecting Africa from the risks of the climate crisis and defending the rights of future generations to development and progress.
He noted that Africa, the continent that produces the least greenhouse gas emissions, is at the heart of the tragedies linked to climate change, which compromises its chances of growth, progress and prosperity and seriously threatens the fundamental rights of tens of millions of Africans.
