Russia declared war on Ukraine yesterday after Ukraine decided to join the US-led NATO and act in support of the European Union. Many Tamil Nadu students are studying medicine in Ukraine.
This includes 14 students from Ramanathapuram district. Their families have been informed that they have taken refuge in the tunnel of a metro station there.
One of them, Naveen hails from the Anujokattai commercial area of Thiruvananthapuram taluka, Ramanathapuram district. He is in the 5th year of his medical studies. Naveen spoke to his family by phone.
Then he said: –
The situation in Ukraine is dire. I stayed with my friends about 100 km from Kiev. More than 450 families lived in the area where I live.
My friends and I were about to board a flight to India on the morning of the 24th when suddenly about 5 km from where I was. The blast took place in the distance. Thus for safety’s sake we took everyone to the metro rail tunnel in the area where we were staying and took refuge there.
We come from fear. The federal government should take action to get Indian students back home and arrange special flights to save us.
