New Delhi: 26 years ago, the entire country was in a state of panic due to Pakistani intrusion on the hills of Kargil. At that time, the Indian Army gave a befitting reply to the nefarious act of the neighboring country. There came a time during the Kargil war when two generals of the Indian Army came face to face. The issue was whether the Indian Air Force should be deployed in the Kargil war or not. A meeting was held between the Indian Army Chief Ved Prakash Malik and the then Air Force Chief Anil Yashwant Tipnis regarding this. The Army Chief wanted the Air Force to be deployed in the Kargil war. Former Air Force Chief Anil Yashwant Tipnis had told during a program that the then PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee had only said that start tomorrow morning. After this decision, the Indian soldiers retaliated in such a way that Pakistan came on its knees.
Former Air Force Chief Tipnis’s revelation
Former Air Force Chief of the country Anil Yashwant Tipnis had made this disclosure about the use of Air Force in the Kargil war during a program. He told that the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee was reluctant to use the Air Force and he refused to allow it to cross the Line of Control (LoC). Tipnis had disclosed that incident in his address on the occasion of the release of the book named ‘A Prime Minister to Remember – Memories of a Military Chief’. This book was written by former Navy Chief Sushil Kumar. The former Air Force Chief told that during the 1999 Kargil war, he and the then Army Chief Ved Prakash Malik had a meeting with Vajpayee. Referring to the conversation that took place in this meeting, Tipnis said his point.

When Atal said- we will not cross the Line of Control
Former Air Force Chief Tipnis said that the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee wanted to know from General Malik whether the Army could work without the help of the Air Force. The former Air Force Chief said that before the then PM Vajpayee could answer Malik, I said that the Army needs the Air Force and we are ready. The Prime Minister thought for a while and then said that start tomorrow morning. He also put forward his point about seeking Vajpayee’s permission to cross the Line of Control. He said that I had never seen such a firm voice. The then PM Vajpayee said that no, we will not cross the Line of Control.
Airforce started action within few hours
Tipnis had said that the Air Force was ready to support the Army in the operation on a short notice of just six hours. Admiral (Retd) Sunil Kumar, who was the Navy Chief during the Kargil conflict, said that Vajpayee turned a ‘strategic loss’ into a huge victory. 26 July 1999 was the day when Pakistan surrendered before the Indian Army. Pakistan, which had started the attack on the border, had no option but to surrender before India.

With the victory in this war that lasted for about two months, the world also got to see the proof of India’s strength. This war started when in May 1999, Pakistani soldiers infiltrated the high hills of Kargil and made their hideouts. On 26 July 1999, the Indian Army declared the complete eviction of Pakistani intruders from the border and the Kargil war ended.
