Over the course of her career, Céline Dion has tried out a lot of fashion. Her hairstyle, however, has almost always remained the same – but in 2003 she surprised everyone with her look.
Céline Dion is known for her tailor-made dresses in which the singer sings touching ballads. The 56-year-old also chose this look for her appearance at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games: in a silver glittery gown, she sang the French song “L’Hymne à l’amour” in front of the Eiffel Tower.
For several years now, Céline Dion has also discovered her passion for unusual fashion. Sometimes she appears in dungarees and over-the-knee boots, sometimes in jogging pants with high heels. You can see some of her best looks here. When it comes to her hairstyle, however, the musician doesn’t dare to experiment too much. The singer prefers to wear her long hair in soft waves – but at a red carpet appearance in 2003 she surprised everyone with a completely different style.
20 years ago, Céline Dion suddenly looked completely different. At the Billboard Awards in December 2003, the soul diva appeared with a cheeky short hairstyle that was elaborately backcombed to make it a real eye-catcher. Her mane was also heavily bleached.
Instead of a glamorous gown, the then 36-year-old opted for an unusually revealing look. The flowing fabric of her beige one-piece was only held together with two glittery straps, allowing for a deep glimpse.
Céline Dion went home without a prize that evening. Nevertheless, her striking styling attracted plenty of attention, as the “My heart will go on” singer presented the award in the category Artist of the Year – rapper 50 Cent was chosen as the winner. Other winners of the evening included Beyoncé and R. Kelly. The awards ceremony was hosted by Ryan Seacrest, Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson.
Celine Dion has now largely withdrawn from the public eye. In December 2022, she announced on social media that she had been diagnosed with stiff person syndrome (SPS). The neurological disease causes muscle cramps in the legs and back.
In the documentary “I Am: Céline Dion” released a few weeks ago, she gave her first insight into her life with the diagnosis. The disease causes her vocal cords, which the artist describes as “her instrument”, to be attacked. This development is what affects her the most: “It’s like someone is choking you,” explained Dion.
Despite the great physical limitations, the singer emphasized that she would not surrender to her fate. Her greatest wish was to be able to perform again. Therefore, her appearance at the opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympic Games was a real goosebumps moment. Not only did the singer have tears in her eyes during her performance, her fans were also touched on social media.
