- It was turned into a bomb shelter after World War II
Block 46 in the metropolitan district “Slatina” looks no different from all the others in the neighborhood. But right behind it is one of the 36 hiding places in the country that are in good condition.
It is called “Object 305”. The hideout was built in 1938 by the Germans and originally
was intended as a Gestapo archive
After the end of World War II, it was turned into a bomb shelter. At the time, such a practice was not uncommon. Even before the end of the war, to protect the population from the widespread conventional weapons, bombs and shells, special shelters were built, basements of buildings were adapted, subways, transport tunnels, garages and mining galleries were used.
That is why the then government decided to make the former archive a hiding place. In the 1950s, major repairs to the galleries began. They are strengthened with reinforced concrete structures. 2 are the main reasons – new and more powerful weapons, including nuclear, as well as the natural collapse of the galleries. Protective hermetic doors are installed, electrical and plumbing installations, filter-ventilation systems are built, ensuring air purification and its supply to the shelters.
The safety of the fugitives depends on the functioning of each system. Protection from the shock wave and debris from collapsing buildings is provided by solid enclosing structures, anti-explosion devices and valves of the air intake and air exhaust systems.
They also protect against the effects of penetrating radiation, light radiation and high temperatures.
“Object 305” has a ventilation system that can switch to purification mode in the event of a chemical or nuclear threat. “The red pipe starts from the emergency exit. It supplies outside air that must be provided to the filter-ventilation device to be distributed to the occupants of the facility,” explains Chief Inspector Krasimir Zarkov of the Metropolitan Fire Department. Breathable air is supplied through the white pipe.
Depending on what the dangers are – whether it will be radioactive, biological or chemical pollution, there is processing through the appropriate filters and the air reaches people fit for breathing.
And the blue pipe, says Zarkov, is used in isolation mode. Then there is no possibility to take air from outside to be processed. Therefore, the internal one is recirculated.
The hideout has clean drinking water,
as well as backup technical water, as well as toilets, food supplies, medical station. The tunnels are 21 meters underground. The annual temperature is constant – about 15 degrees. Therefore, it does not need to be cooled or heated. The bomb shelter has a network of tunnels with benches, if necessary a second row can be attached. Its capacity is about 600 people.
