Her performance at the opening ceremony of the Summer Olympics in Paris was celebrated. But Lady Gaga is said to have recorded it beforehand.
The 2024 Olympics have begun: On Friday evening, the Summer Games were opened with a spectacular live show. And not in the stadium as usual, but in the middle of Paris. More than 320,000 people gathered on the banks of the Seine and on the bridges, and more than a billion people around the world watched the opening ceremony on screens.
US singer Lady Gaga appeared in the first show. In a revue act in the shadow of the world-famous Notre Dame Cathedral, she was accompanied on a golden staircase by dancers with pink pom-poms. In keeping with the setting, she performed the song “Mon Truc En Plume” by Zizi Jeanmaire in French.
The singer began her performance with the words “Good evening and welcome to Paris” – which is now causing a stir. According to information from the German Press Agency, it was not performed live. When the show was shown during the opening ceremony, the stage was deserted. Apparently the act was recorded beforehand and only broadcast on the big screens in the city.
According to the Associated Press, Lady Gaga was on stage about three hours before the opening ceremony began and sang for about an hour before she disappeared again. When asked by the AP, there was no comment yet on the reason for the early show.
Although the singer’s performance was celebrated, the recording also caused anger on social media. Numerous fans expressed their disappointment on the short message service, among other things. “Am I the only one who is bothered that she didn’t sing live?” asked one user. Another wondered: “Why is she traveling to Paris if she’s going to record something?” “I would have loved to see her here,” reads another comment.
Lady Gaga has not yet commented on the matter. On X she simply wrote about the performance: “I am so grateful to have been asked to open the Olympic Games in Paris […] I wanted nothing more than to create a performance that would warm the heart of France, celebrate French art and music and, on such a significant occasion, remind everyone of one of the most magical cities in the world – Paris.”
The original dance number of the song, which is called “Mein Federzeug” in German, also with a large feather fan, was once the trademark of the dancer and singer Jeanmaire. It was not Lady Gaga’s first performance in French; she had already sung in the language in the film “A Star is Born”.
