The US Army is considering using the SM-6 anti-aircraft guided missile, which is in service with the Navy ships, as a surface-to-air weapon. The military wants to obtain a new munition to strengthen air and missile defense, The War Zone (TWZ) writes, Day.Az reports with reference to Lenta.ru.
“The Army is looking at Navy interceptors like the SM-6,” said Sean Shaney, head of the Army Space and Missile Defense Command.
It is noted that the military has already begun deploying the SM-6 as part of the Typhon missile system, but in this case the missile will be used to destroy ground targets. In parallel, the army is working on new radars that will allow the SM-6 to be introduced as a ground-based air defense weapon.
Last week, Raytheon demonstrated a simulated missile attack that was intercepted by the U.S. Army’s Lower Tier Air and Missile Defense Sensor (LTAMDS) radar and an SM-6 missile. “This demonstrates the feasibility of using the SM-6 as a complementary capability within the Army’s integrated air and missile defense architecture,” the company said.
