“If I don’t get paid in August, I’m bankrupt. I’m preparing for the end now. I’m going to tell my five employees to resign soon and I’m going to use my own money to create a severance package.”
Mr. A, who has been selling home appliances on Timon since 2021, is going through bankruptcy proceedings due to failure to receive the settlement money. The settlement money he is supposed to receive from Timon amounts to approximately 1.8 billion won.
Timon and WeMakePrice, which have stepped in to resolve the ‘unsettled sales payment situation’, have started refunding customers, but the refunds to consumers are still woefully inadequate. ‘Payment settlement’ for the 60,000 or so small business owners who have entered the platform is not even mentioned.
There is no disagreement with the policy that consumers who purchased products or services should be given priority for refunds as they are ‘good victims’.
However, while consumers are not suffering damages that could shake their livelihoods, small businesses claim that they are at a crossroads of life and death, facing the risk of bankruptcy as payment settlements are repeatedly delayed.
According to the industry on the 27th, Timon and WeMakePrice are providing refunds to customers who purchased products from the previous day.
WeMakePrice, which started refunds first, refunded travel products for about 2,000 customers. Timon announced that it has prepared about 3 billion won in refunds.
WeMakePrice and TMON are making every effort to reassure customers that they will take responsibility and process refunds, but they are still being criticized for their severe lack of funds and processing speed.
According to an investigation by the Financial Supervisory Service, the unsettled amount of Timon and WeMakePrice amounts to 170 billion won.
The problem is the tenants who are constantly delaying payment. It is estimated that more than 90% of the tenants in Timon and WeMakePrice are small business owners. The number is estimated to be around 60,000.
Small business owners are expressing their desperation, saying, “This is a matter of livelihood.”
This is because consumer refunds are prioritized, so the settlement order number is not even given.
Even if the government steps in, small businesses are fearful that they may have difficulty receiving money.
It was reported that 42 small businesses that entered WeMakePrice through the Small Business Distribution Center, an organization under the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, did not receive sales payments of approximately 2.6 billion won. The Ministry of SMEs and Startups, which was aware of the situation in advance, rescued 40 small businesses that entered WeMakePrice by collecting 2 billion won in delayed payments on their behalf.
A small business owner selling products on Timon raised the question in a famous seller community, “Consumers and sellers are already leaving, so where is (Timon) going to get the money to settle the accounts?”
Another seller said, “I asked the merchandise planner (MD) and he said that they will process (settle) sequentially, but he doesn’t know when that will happen,” adding, “I’m getting tired of waiting without any plan in sight.”
