Argentina recovered from their defeat in the opening round of the men’s football tournament and defeated Iraq this Saturday (27) by 3 to 1. Almada, Gondou, and Ezequiel Fernández scored the goals for the Albiceleste. Aymen Hussein scored a consolation goal for Iraq.
The Argentine victory began to take shape in the 13th minute of the first half with a beautiful shot from midfielder Almada, who was recently signed by Botafogo. Still in stoppage time of the first half, Iraq managed to equalize after Hussein took advantage of a corner kick and scored with a header.
With the score tied as they went into the locker rooms, Argentina returned for the second half under pressure to seek the victory and succeeded. Gondou, with a header, put the score at 2 to 1. And to secure the three points and reassure the team, Ezequiel Fernández sealed the 3 to 1 in the 39th minute of the second half.
This victory places the Argentine National Team in contention in Group B for a spot in the next round. It’s worth remembering that in the first round, the Argentines were defeated 2 to 1 by Morocco in a match marked by confusion.
