The decision of the Supreme Court on the chief prosecutor is not particularly optimistic, said the MP from PP-DB
The SC decision won’t get people protesting in the streets, but its consequences I’m sure will. Because the SJC will not hesitate and choose a new chief prosecutor in the same savage way, as they did earlier with Ivan Geshev. This was stated on the air of “Hello, Bulgaria” on Nova TV by PP-DB deputy Yavor Bozhankov, commenting on the decision of the Constitutional Court on the changes in the basic law, concerning the judicial reform in its part on the powers of the chief prosecutor.
In his opinion, what follows from the decision of the Constitutional Court is not very optimistic. Within the framework of democratic procedures, several tools remain – one is protest. “The question is not if, but when. And when our society realizes that they are waiting for another 7 years of the same, then we will speak again,” the deputy pointed out.
“Bulgaria had a big problem. Unfortunately, it continues to have this problem. And it is this: one figure, one person – has unlimited power for seven years. And if someone controls this person, they chose him or hold him with kompromat, then he holds the entire state accusation. And it is not an exaggeration to say that he also holds the entire political system,” Bozhankov pointed out. He added that who the people will choose in elections does not seem to be so important if the power tools of the state continue to work according to the Soviet model of governance, which is unique not only for Bulgaria, but also for Europe.
“Up until now, we have clearly given the only formula – this battle is not being fought by another political force, we are fighting it ourselves. It crashed in the Constitutional Court. Unfortunately, there is one good news. What remains are the texts through which citizens can directly complain to the Constitutional Court. For this reform was worth it even for this text. This is a huge victory. But the big problem with the figure of the prosecutor remains,” he underlined.
Bozhankov stated that the big question is whether the Supreme Judicial Council with expired mandates and with the controversial reputation of some of its members will be left to choose the chief prosecutor.
“Everyone says that if it doesn’t work with an ordinary National Assembly, how about we make a Grand one. And it can change Bulgaria as a form of government, it can make it a monarchy, a presidential republic. We are actually looking for some magical solution, and it is simple and is before us. The election will most likely be in October. Who sends the judges to the Constitutional Court. If the prices are high in the store regulates this? The regulators. Who elects them?
