Worksport, a technology company from the United States, has announced a protective cover for trucks equipped with solar photovoltaic modules. The kit includes a battery and an inverter, and is designed as a portable power source for recreational activities like camping or as a temporary backup to recharge electronic devices or small appliances during power outages.

The energy technology and heat pump specialized company, Worksport, has launched a cover for the bed of the Ford F-150 Lightning, an electric truck. This solar cover, named Solis, will be sold in a kit that includes a Worksport inverter, called Hub, and a rechargeable battery of 2000 W, 120 V AC 60 Hz, named Cor.

Technical Features

The Solis kit is designed as an off-grid energy solution for consumers. Initially, it will be marketed in the North American market, with plans to expand to global markets. The Solis covers can range in size from 2.7 m² to 4.3 m². The modules contain M10 cells with an efficiency of 22%, provided by an undisclosed supplier. Flexible monocrystalline cells will be used, offering 170 W/m² after conversion. The weight will be between 10 kg and 11 kg per m². These performance figures are considered under a solar irradiance of 1000 W/m².

Components

The product will be sold in a kit that includes mounting brackets for the truck bed and cables. The battery is a 2000 W unit with a capacity of 1534 kWh, 120 V AC, 60 Hz. It uses lithium, nickel, cobalt, and manganese battery cells (Li-NCM). The nominal voltage is 48 V, and the minimum voltage is 40.3 V. The maximum battery discharge current is 60 A, and the maximum charge current is 20 A. The discharge temperature range is from -20 °C to 65 °C, while the battery charge temperature range is from 0 °C to 55 °C.

The inverter has an output frequency of 60 Hz and a maximum output power of 3 kW. It has a hot swap capacity of 200 Wh, overload protection, 4 DC outputs, as well as ports for USB charging and a cigarette lighter connector.

Availability and Price

The Solis product is not yet available for purchase. Worksport stated that the products are in the testing phase and final prices are not confirmed. The estimated price for the battery is $1,499, including the inverter, an external battery, and charging cables. Combined with Solis, the estimated price is $3,499.

Uses and Applications

Some of the scenarios considered by Worksport, besides camping, include charging devices like mobile phones, tablets, or other electronics during power outages at home or in the office. It is not designed to charge electric vehicle (EV) charging systems, although the company could develop such technology in the future, as its internal estimates suggest that the photovoltaic cover could provide enough charge to add a potential range of up to 16 km per day.
