Asbestos was one of the most common materials in construction until 2002, when it was banned after it has been proven to cause diseases such as lung cancer, which is why the European Union has set 2028 as the deadline to remove it from any building. This process is a problem in Catalonia, where there are buildings containing asbestos in almost all municipal districts, 945 out of 947, according to a report from the Ombudsman. In addition, only 259 of these municipalities have prepared reports so that the Generalitat can work.
The situation is even worse when 27 areas have not set a date to replace the asbestos, out of those 259 municipalities that already have reports. Although the neighbors are not aware of the situation, as Juan María Soler, spokesperson against asbestos for the Federation of Neighborhood Associations of Barcelona (FAVB) declares: “We do not know that It is a carcinogenic element of the first order. Indeed, the wind, air and rain release these fibers and contaminate the people around them.”
This material has a useful life of 20 to 50 years. From that date, toxic substances are more aggressive. Another additional problem is the cost of its removal, specifically, it can cost more than 3,000 euros to remove it from a 50 square meter roof.
