Once again, the Secretary of Culture of the Government of Mexico, Alejandra Fraustoreported on the progress made so far in the process of reconstruction of damaged built cultural heritage by the earthquakes of 2017.

Regarding the progress, as a recount of the damages, Frausto Guerrero recalled that the evaluation carried out by this administration, led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, found around 3 thousand 269 properties affected, mainly temples, distributed between Chiapas, Mexico City, State of Mexico, Guerrero, Oaxaca, Puebla, Tlaxcala and Morelos.

He also emphasized how vital it is to “a preventive maintenance plan“:
“Preventive maintenance is like medicine: preventive maintenance is the best. If we had maintained these treasures, we would not have suffered the catastrophe that we did. The lesson has been very hard, so we must continue to care for, restore, and take preventive care of this extraordinary built treasure that is our country.”
Finally, he commented that at the beginning of this year, there were 974 properties to be finished, and that was when “the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit […] (intervened) to sign everything in one morning.” For this reason, he explains, “we managed to trigger this feat to complete 974 works, Of which we have today 729 completed and 245 in progress.“.
