It is expected that the newly elected president of Iran, Massoud Pezeshkian, who called himself a reformist during the election campaign, will take the oath in the parliament today. His inauguration was already confirmed by Iran’s supreme spiritual leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in a special ceremony on Sunday, reports Associated Press.
M. Pezeshkian won the emergency presidential election, which was held after the previous president Ebrahim Raisi lost his life in a plane crash in May.
Financial Times reminds that during the election campaign M. Pezeshkians promised changes – the resumption of dialogue with the West in order to achieve the softening of international economic sanctions, as well as the reduction of social restrictions, such as Internet censorship and targeting women who do not wear hijab in society. However, at the same time, the new president has clearly emphasized absolute loyalty to A. Khamenei and announced that he will not try to achieve radical changes in the Shiite theocratic regime ruling Iran, where all major decisions are approved by A. Khamenei.

After today’s swearing-in in parliament, M. Pezeshkian will have to form a government within two weeks, which must then pass a vote of confidence in parliament.
