President Yoon Seok-yeol met with Professor Andrew Ng of Stanford University, a leading expert in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), and exchanged opinions on the prospects for economic and social development through AI and the importance of fostering AI talent and startups.

President Yoon proposed to Professor Eung that he join the Presidential Committee on AI, and Professor Eung accepted.

In particular, Professor Eung established AI Fund Korea and announced his intention to foster domestic AI startups.

Park Sang-wook, Senior Secretary to the President for Science and Technology, announced in a briefing held at the Yongsan government building that day, “This afternoon, President Yoon met with Professor Andrew Ng, founder of the AI Fund and one of the world’s top four AI experts.”

According to Chief Park, President Yoon and Professor Eung shared the view that it is important to secure excellent AI talent and build an ecosystem in which startups lead technological innovation.

At this event, President Yoon told Professor Eung, “Korea has the world’s best hardware competitiveness in semiconductors and smartphones, as well as sufficient software capabilities as it developed the world’s third largest AI model,” and explained, “We are preparing to make a leap forward through AI transformation in various industrial sectors such as mobility and clothing.”

Professor Eung said, “Korea has strong government will, excellent technological innovation capabilities, and an AI software ecosystem as well as an industrial base such as semiconductors that are essential for AI, so it has great potential to become an AI country.”

He then predicted, “There is great potential for it to become one of the world’s top three AI powers, following the United States and China.”

He also said, “I hope to work closely with domestic companies to foster AI talent through AI education and training and to further develop Korea’s AI startup ecosystem.”

He specifically told President Yoon that he plans to establish AI Fund Korea to foster Korean AI startups and make Korea a global hub for the startup-led AI innovation ecosystem.

President Yoon said, “I want to directly take charge of national policies such as AI innovation, safety, and AI transition,” and requested Professor Eung’s participation in the advisory group of the National Artificial Intelligence Commission, which is being established directly under the president.

Professor Yeung immediately expressed his intention to participate, saying, “I will contribute to the development of AI in Korea and international cooperation between Korea and the United States.”

This is the third time that President Yoon has met with an AI expert, following Professor Geoffrey Hinton of the University of Toronto and Professor Yann LeCun of New York University. He has met with all four of the world’s top AI experts, excluding Professor Yoshua Bengio of Montreal.

Professor Eung is currently operating a 220 billion won AI specialized startup fund, and he plans to foster global startups while expanding Korea as a springboard for the Asian hub of AI funds.

According to a presidential official, Professor Eung is quite positive about the Korean government’s careful regulation of AI and rapid technological innovation.

The official also reported that Professor Yeung said during his meeting with President Yoon that day, “Not only is Korea’s hardware competitive in semiconductors and various devices, but its software is also surprisingly strong.”

Meanwhile, President Yoon passed the ‘Presidential Decree on the Establishment and Operation of the National Artificial Intelligence Commission’ at the Cabinet meeting this morning.

The National AI Commission is chaired by the president, and Yeom Jae-ho, president of Taejae University, has been nominated as the civilian vice-chairman. An official from the Office of the President said that the committee’s composition will be announced at the time of the first meeting of the AI Commission, and that “it is currently being composed of surprising scholars and global businesspeople.”
