The number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits for the first time increased by 20 thousand last week, to 243 thousand, according to a report from the US Department of Labor, Day.Az reports with reference to Interfax.

According to revised data, the figure for the previous week was 223,000, up from 222,000 as previously reported.

Analysts on average had forecast a rise in claims to 222,800 from the previous week’s previously announced level, according to Bloomberg. Trading Economics respondents had expected an increase to 230,000.

The nation’s four-week average of jobless claims, a less volatile measure, rose to 234,750 from 233,750 the week before.

The number of Americans continuing to receive unemployment benefits rose to 1.867 million in the week ended July 6, up from a revised 1.847 million the week before.

On average, experts expected the figure to increase to 1.860 million from the previously announced level of 1.852 million in the previous week.
