Even if Net Zero emissions are achieved as a global goal in 2050, fossil fuels will continue to play a role in global energy security.
This was stated by Deputy Minister of Energy, Chief Executive Officer of COP29 Elnur Soltanov at the presentation of the Action Plan of Azerbaijan’s presidency at the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), Day.Az reports.
“Limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees is one of the goals of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. But at the same time, we must not forget that the production and transportation of hydrocarbons, although they produce carbon dioxide emissions, play an important role in the world’s energy security. In the latest energy forecast of the bp company, for example, it was noted that even under the zero emissions scenario (Net Zero) by 2050, one percent of global electricity production will use coal as fuel for power plants,” Soltanov noted.
He expressed the opinion that the problem of plastic waste can be solved by reducing the production and use of plastic. This will save natural gas as a transition fuel.
