Since the heroic intervention of the Royal Armed Forces (FAR), on the High Instructions of HM the King, Supreme Commander and Chief of General Staff of the FAR, to restore the movement of goods and people, this border post has experienced a significant boost in social and economic development, within the framework of the Royal vision aimed at promoting the economic development and urbanization of this area of the Moroccan Sahara.
In this regard, the development effort of the El Guerguarat border post has been supported by the launch of a series of socio-economic projects in recent years, due to its strategic geographical position on the Moroccan-Mauritanian border and the fluidity of traffic to Mauritania and other West African countries.
The El Guerguarat border post has been equipped, in this sense, with a seawater desalination plant, for a total cost of 30 million dirhams (MDH) financed to the tune of 26 MDH by the Agency for the Promotion and Economic and Social Development of the Southern Provinces (APDS), and 4 MDH by the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE).
This major project consists of the construction and equipment of a new borehole, a seawater desalination plant for a flow rate of 432 m3/day and the construction of a raised reservoir, with a capacity of 200 m3, as well as a distribution network with a linear length of 5 km.
It will allow the improvement of drinking water supply conditions for the population of this area by a supply of better quality water, from a local desalination plant, distributed, in a first phase by tanker trucks.
It also includes, in a second phase, the creation of a drinking water distribution network, the launch of which is planned for 2024.
The infrastructure at the El Guerguarat border post has also been strengthened by the inauguration and launch of several development projects, particularly the opening of a new Al Barid Bank branch, which is fully in line with the development dynamics of the southern provinces of the Kingdom, driven by HM King Mohammed VI.
This project, which was completed within 18 months, for a total amount of more than 5.23 MDH on a total area estimated at 1,030 m², including approximately 749 m2 covered, includes an Al Barid Bank agency, Barid Cash and two other agencies, in addition to four shops and six staff housing units.
Similarly, a hotel unit with a total surface area of more than 1,000 m² was inaugurated at the El Guerguarat border post. Mobilizing a budget of approximately 7.6 MDH, this hotel establishment has a capacity of 36 beds.
On the spiritual side, the “Al-Khair” mosque with a capacity of 520 worshipers was inaugurated in El Guerguarat, at an estimated cost of 8.8 MDH and on an area of 3,767 m².
This religious building, whose construction work was launched on November 18, 2020, on the occasion of the 65th anniversary of the Kingdom’s Independence Day, is part of the efforts aimed at meeting the spiritual needs of the local population and passengers, by allowing them to fulfill their religious duties, in an atmosphere of meditation marked by piety and spirituality.
The construction of this mosque in this strategic point, which opened its doors to the faithful at the beginning of Ramadan 1444 AH, brings happiness not only to the people working at the border post, but also to the users of this strategic road axis.
On the sporting front, work has begun on the development of a football pitch in El Guerguarat, in order to make it available to local clubs, which could contribute to encouraging the practice of football and revealing the sporting talents of tomorrow in the region.
Carried out by the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF), through the National Agency for Public Equipment, this project consists of covering the field with new generation synthetic turf, mobilizing a total amount estimated at 9 MDH.
The football field will be strengthened by the implementation of several outbuildings, including sanitary facilities, players’ and referees’ changing rooms, stands and fences around the field.
The launch of the development of this land in El Guergarat is part of the efforts aimed at strengthening sports infrastructure in the southern provinces of the Kingdom and within the framework of the infrastructure program launched by the FRMF in 2014.
In the health sector, nearly 400 people from the rural commune of Bir Gandouz and the El Guergarat border post were able to benefit from a Moroccan-American multidisciplinary medical caravan.
Initiated by the Volunteer Morocco association, the Moroccan Embassy in Washington and the Fondation du Sud, in cooperation with the “Paul Chester” Foundation, the Provincial Committee for Human Development of Aousserd and the Provincial Delegation of Health and Social Protection, this human and solidarity action aims to bring medical services closer to social categories in precarious situations in rural areas.
Mobilizing a staff of 34 American and Moroccan doctors, in addition to multi-skilled nurses, administrators and technicians, this humanitarian mission focused on a range of services that covered curative care in general and specialized medicine, particularly in gynecology and ophthalmology, in addition to dental care.
