On Tuesday evening, the Israeli army announced that it had killed Fouad Chokr, a senior leader of Iran’s Shiite militia group Hezbollah, in an airstrike in Beirut. This work was presented as a response to the deadly attack on the Golan Heights of Syria, where 12 children were killed a few days ago.
In a statement, the Israeli army said its fighters targeted and shot down Chokr, who served as the head of Hezbollah’s strategic wing. Army spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said Chokr was directly responsible for the Majdal Shams massacre. The attack was carried out with an Iranian Falaq-1 rocket fired by Hezbollah at a football field in northern Israel on Saturday evening.
A targeted attack against a high-ranking terrorist
Hagari described Fouad Chokr as the right-hand man of Hassan Nasrallah, the head of Hezbollah, and a “high-level terrorist” who was involved in many attacks against Israel and other targets. The airstrikes in Beirut are therefore presented as a punitive measure aimed at reducing Hezbollah’s operational capabilities and response to recent violence.
The action marks an escalation in tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, as the two groups continue to face each other in a series of clashes and retaliations.
