Prime Minister Han Duck-soo said on the 31st that he was “proud and grateful” to Jang Yeon-ho, who donated 760,000 won in royalties from the first edition of a book about his battle with leukemia to Seoul Asan Medical Center.
Prime Minister Han said this on Facebook that morning, “Yeonho, who was diagnosed with leukemia at the young age of not even 20, grew into a generous young man who thought of his ‘junior patients’ who were suffering the same pain as he did, instead of feeling resentful, saying, ‘Why did I have to go through this?’”
Mr. Jang is a young man living in Jeonju, Jeollabuk-do. He was an ordinary high school senior preparing for the 2021 college entrance exam, but he collapsed the day before his final exam and began his fight against leukemia.
Fortunately, Mr. Jang’s surgery was successful, and he is now healthy enough to only receive outpatient treatment once every three months. Mr. Jang compiled these stories of his struggles with illness into an essay collection titled ‘The Beginning Seen from the End’, and is preparing for the CSAT again.
“I have acquaintances who have battled cancer,” said Prime Minister Han. “I have seen even strong-minded people who have experienced everything in life often become weak.”
He continued, “I heard that cancer treatment is very difficult,” and added, “I think that not only is it physically painful, but you must also feel lonely and anxious mentally.”
Unlike before his illness, when he had aspirations to become a lawyer, Mr. Jang now realizes that he is receiving an abundance of love from his family and medical staff, and wants to become someone who shares that love.
Prime Minister Han said, “There are only about 100 days left until the CSAT. I hope that you take care of yourself, study hard, and get good scores,” and added, “Regardless of your score, in the hearts of those who love and support Yeonho, Yeonho is the top scorer this year.”
He continued, “Yeonho’s parents and the medical staff who took care of him have worked hard,” and added, “Our society is in conflict over many issues, but on days like today, I feel that the Republic of Korea is healthy.”
