Unemployment in Germany is rising faster than expected. The Federal Employment Agency gives a reason for the negative development.
As a result of the weak economy, the number of unemployed in Germany rose more sharply in July than is usual for the start of the summer break. The Federal Employment Agency (BA) registered 2.809 million unemployed, the agency announced on Wednesday in Nuremberg. That is 82,000 more than in June and 192,000 more than a year ago.
“The weak economic development is putting pressure on the labor market,” explained BA board member Daniel Terzenbach. The unemployment rate rose by 0.2 percentage points to 6.0 percent.
According to the BA, excluding seasonal effects, the number of unemployed increased by 18,000 month-on-month. According to the BA, more short-time work was reported in July than in the previous month. However, according to BA projections, the number of people claiming short-time work benefits recently fell to 211,000 in May, after 226,000 in April and 213,000 in March.
According to the BA, 903,000 people received unemployment benefits in July, 105,000 more than a year earlier. The number of employable people entitled to citizen’s allowance was 4.021 million in July, 75,000 more than a year earlier.
