According to a study, almost one in three women and just over one in four men avoid beach vacations. Self-doubt and social media play a major role in this. Young people have the highest priority of themselves and others.
WBecause they don’t feel comfortable in themselves, many people in Germany have already taken beach vacations, according to a survey. Almost every third woman and just about every fourth man avoided the situation, which they found unpleasant, as if it was a typical one. study health insurance company Pronova BKK shows.
Nearly 1,600 women and men ages 18 and older participated in an online survey in April. The results are out now in Leverkusen. Women in particular try to cover their unwanted parts of the body: 75 percent of those surveyed said they hide them as best as possible. For men, the ratio is 47 percent.
However, young people are particularly important to themselves: 71 percent of 18 to 29-year-olds are reported to take action before the holidays to change their external appearance. More than half (53 percent) of those under 30 are open to cosmetic procedures. According to the survey, 18 percent have had minor procedures, such as Botox injections, made specifically for relaxation. 15 percent of this age group even decided to have major cosmetic surgery, such as liposuction or facials, before going on vacation.
Self-esteem is also important to do with the influence of social media, explains Patrizia Thamm, who works as a health promotion consultant at a health insurance company. “Generation Z experiences significant pressure to conform to the ideals presented on social media.”
Half of those under 30 regularly edit their photos before showing them to friends or posting them online, according to the survey results. The health expert criticizes that this distorts self-awareness. “There is a lack of education and acceptance of different views.”
Body shame: Teens have extreme body ideals
According to the results, 43 percent of those under 30 are of the opinion that fat people should not put themselves in bikinis, swimsuits or young adults. This view is shared by 32 percent of the entire population. Health expert Thamm warns that those affected by such body shaming may become more dissatisfied with themselves and their body image and resort to discrimination.
“A shy person’s emotional well-being worsens and can lead to low self-esteem, depression, anxiety and even suicidal tendencies.”
