Ms. Tembo, who is on an official visit to the Kingdom, was able to see first-hand the economic and social growth as well as the political and democratic dynamics that this region is experiencing, in addition to the efforts made to strengthen basic infrastructure, as part of the implementation of the new development model for the southern provinces, launched by HM King Mohammed VI in 2015.

In a statement to the press, following her meetings with elected officials and local officials, she also welcomed the quality of the infrastructure and investments implemented in Laayoune, saying she was extremely “impressed” by the quality of the projects carried out in this region.

“We were informed about the seawater desalination projects, the road infrastructure and the means to enhance natural resources, particularly in the field of phosphates, in addition to the role of the phosphate port in Laayoune,” she continued.

This development momentum will improve the quality and living conditions of citizens, who benefit from all the basic infrastructures, continued Ms. Tembo, highlighting the efforts of local authorities to ensure the development of this region.

The Malawian minister also expressed her country’s willingness to draw inspiration from the experience of the Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra region in terms of investments and infrastructure, stressing the need to further strengthen communication between the two countries, with a view to benefiting from all-round development in the southern provinces.

Earlier in the day, Ms. Tembo and the accompanying delegation held a meeting with the Wali of the Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra region, Governor of the province of Laayoune, Abdeslam Bekrate, during which emphasis was placed on the development boom that the region is experiencing in different areas and on the democratic process in the southern provinces, in particular the last elections marked by a massive participation of the local population.

They also heard a presentation by a Regional Council official, in which he highlighted the region’s various flagship projects, as well as the role of this elected body in managing local affairs.

Likewise, they were invited to follow a presentation given by the director of the Regional Investment Center, Mohammed Jifer, in which he detailed, with figures to support it, the macroeconomic indicators at the regional level ranging from maritime fishing to renewable energies, including agriculture, tourism and urban upgrading.

Subsequently, the Malawian minister went, accompanied by Mr. Bekrate and the Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of Malawi in Rabat, Kennedy Bisani Lweya, to the Consulate General of the Republic of Malawi in Laayoune which was inaugurated on July 29, 2021, thus marking her firm support for Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara and its territorial integrity.

On this occasion, the Minister and the delegation accompanying her visited the City of Trades and Skills and the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy, which are part of the development model for the southern provinces, as well as the phosphate port.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Malawi held, during this week, a series of meetings notably with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans living abroad, Nasser Bourita and the Minister of Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries, Rural Development and Water and Forests, Mohamed Sadiki, as well as with government officials concerned with bilateral cooperation.

It should be recalled that the Republic of Malawi inaugurated its embassy in Rabat on Monday, during a ceremony co-chaired by Mr. Bourita and his Malawian counterpart, Nancy Tembo.

Mrs. Tembo, had reaffirmed, during the same day in Rabat, her country’s support for the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Morocco. This position was expressed in the joint statement made public, at the end of the meeting held between Mr. Bourita and his Malawian counterpart.

The first session of the Morocco-Malawi Joint Cooperation Commission will be held during the first quarter of 2024, with a view to strengthening collaboration between the two countries.
