If you are a fan of French fry sauce, you may be a little disappointed. McDonald’s France has reduced the amount of its popular side dish without reducing the price, according to information of 60 million customers and confirmed to Le Parisien.

“We confirmed that the capacity of our sachets of potato chip sauce increased to 10 ml, as was already the case for ketchup,” the multinational told Le Parisien.

From 14 to 10 ml

A main course comes with the purchase of a side of fries or potatoes. Normally, if you want to eat an additional portion (at prices of 15 to 20 euros in most cases, some restaurants do not charge), the customer receives a 14 ml sachet. From now on it will be only 10 mm, almost 30% smaller than before.

To justify this reduction, the fast food giant cites a “consistency method” in reference to the size of the ketchup portion. The red sauce would have “always been 10 ml”, explains McDonald’s France, which has recorded record sales declines in France this year.

Restaurants run away from “crying”

This method of reducing the size of a product without changing the price or informing the customer is called “shrinkflation” or “reflation”. In some cases, the costs are even higher. From July 1, 2024, this procedure has been banned in France as follows of the order published in the Official Journal in April.

Merchandisers are required to add a recall card if the stock value drops without a price tag.

Except that restaurants or fast food outlets are obviously not concerned because we are talking about shops “with a sales area greater than 400 m2”, we can read in the text from the Ministry of Economy. For now, countries like McDonald’s are exempt from this type of practice.
