The internationally known mountaineer Adriano Bonmassar from Trentino died on Monday morning.

The 58-year-old, who previously managed the Revò hut in Nonstal, intended to climb the 4,478-meter summit in Valais via the Hörnli ridge with a companion in a two-person rope team. At an altitude of about 3,650 meters, the two climbers were caught by a rockfall, as reported by the cantonal police. He fell about a hundred meters into the abyss. Bonmassar’s companion was unharmed. The accident occurred at an altitude of 3,460 meters.

The exact cause is not yet fully clarified. According to an initial reconstruction, a landslide severed the safety rope and swept Bonmassar away.

The Swiss mountain rescue, which arrived by helicopter, could only confirm the mountaineer’s death, as reported by Italian media.

Already on Thursday, a female climber had a fatal accident on the Matterhorn. The mountaineer fell about 100 meters down the east face at an altitude of about 3,460 meters above sea level.
