Following previous lawsuits against counterfeiters, Amazon has filed a similar lawsuit alleging that AppSally and Rebatest coordinated the publication of false reviews of the company’s products in exchange for free money or items.

Amazon claims to have investigated the brokers and found that both were responsible for the organization’s more than 900,000 members who are “willing to write fake reviews”. In its announcement, Amazon claimed that the companies posted false reviews on eBay, Walmart and Etsy as well as on its website. The e-commerce giant said AppSally is selling false reviews for “up to $ 20”. AppSally and Rebatest did not immediately respond to a request from Retail Dive for comment.

In its efforts to stop fraudulent activity on its platform, Amazon has repeatedly turned to the courts. In 2015, the company sued a California man for allegedly running fake review sites. The following year, the company sued three merchants on its platform for using fake accounts to share positive reviews about their products.

The company said AppSally is sending scam investigators empty boxes and instructing “bad players” to provide the company with images to upload with the reviews. A discount, according to Amazon, pays people for writing 5-star reviews once their reviews are approved by scammers who sell these products.

Amazon said that by 2020 it had prevented more than 200 million possible fake reviews before they were visible to online shoppers. But these are not just fake reviews that Amazon is fighting in court. The retailer also teamed up with brands like Salvatore Ferragamo, HanesBrands, Valentino and KF Beauty to sue sellers of counterfeit products on its platform.
