A witness told Reuters that a loud explosion was heard in the suburbs south of Beirut, near a stronghold of the Lebanese Shiite group, at around 7:40 PM local time (5:40 PM in Lisbon).
Lebanon’s state television reports that at least one woman has died and seven people have been injured. A source from Hezbollah told France Presse that Fouad Chokr, the military commander targeted in the Israeli attack, survived the attack.
For his part, Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati condemned today a “flagrant aggression” by Israel. In a statement, Mikati referred to it as a “criminal act” and called on the international community to “take its responsibilities” and “pressure Israel to stop the aggressions and threats.”
In a statement, Hamas vehemently condemned the attack in Beirut, considering it a “dangerous escalation” in the conflict.
On Monday, the Israeli Prime Minister had promised to respond “strongly” to the Saturday attack that hit a football field in the Golan Heights, occupied by Israel.
Twelve children and teenagers died, all aged between 10 and 16 years. Another 16 minors were injured and remain hospitalized, seven of whom are in serious condition.
During the morning, Israel had already attacked ten Hezbollah targets in various regions of Lebanon, killing one fighter from the group. In turn, the Shiite group launched several rockets at Israel, killing one Israeli civilian.
