(ANSA) – MILAN, AUGUST 1 – “I will bring the issue of glucagon spray to the regional council in the first session of September: the commitment is to guarantee the availability of this life-saving drug, pending the outcome of the negotiations that AIFA is carrying out with the pharmaceutical company that produces it”.
This is what the Welfare Councillor of the Lombardy Region, Guido Bertolaso, said regarding the glucagon-based drug sold as a nasal spray, used in cases where a diabetic patient is in severe hypoglycemic crisis, a serious acute complication of type 1 diabetes.
The drug, approved by Aifa in 2021, was included in Class A, therefore reimbursed by the national health service but, from October 2023, it was included in Class C, therefore paid by the patient.
“It is essential that all diabetics have free access to it – continues Bertolaso - so that they have it available in the event of episodes of severe hypoglycemia, since timely administration can save their lives. I intend to propose on the same occasion to also support the use of the monoclonal antibody against the syncytial virus, responsible for the majority of bronchiolitis in children”.
Carrying out timely prevention with the monoclonal antibody “will finally allow us to reduce the spread of this virus which every year, especially during the winter season, is the cause of numerous hospitalizations of children with very serious consequences, including unfortunately the possibility of death” concludes the councilor, underlining that, as regards funding, given that these are products “intended to save lives”, the Region will use “the funds that have been assigned to us in the recently agreed division of the national health fund, regardless of whether or not they fall within the Lea”.
