Speaking at an international conference organized by the Municipal Council of Azemmour, in partnership with the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication, the Casablanca-Settat region, the Consulate General of Morocco in New York and the City University of New York (CUNY), he highlighted his immense contributions during the exploration of North America in the 16th century.

In a statement to the press, Mr. El Jamoussi noted that the extraordinary exploits of this Moroccan explorer give an even deeper dimension to the relations between the Kingdom of Morocco and the United States of America, indicating that his odyssey is taught in American school textbooks and represents a reflective subject for academics and historians.

He revealed that Mustapha Zemmouri participated in the rescue of four human lives during an exploration expedition composed of 600 people under his command which lasted 8 years between Florida and California.

He also indicated that today’s meeting is an extension of an international conference entitled “In the footsteps of a remarkable African explorer”, organized last February in the prestigious City University of New York.

Similarly, academic Chouaïb Halifi stressed the importance of this international conference which builds bridges between the African, American and European continents, adding that history remembers the remarkable contributions of many Moroccan personalities with a universalist spirit.

“In the history of exploration, Mustapha Zemmouri stands out as one of the major explorers of North America, celebrated in America and Europe,” he said, noting the importance of such a celebration in the emergence of a common cultural identity.

Hence the importance of this international conference, which is held over two days under the theme “Mustapha Zemmouri, a Mediterranean cultural bridge and a humanist heritage”. Organized in partnership with the Provincial Association of Cultural Affairs and with the support of the OCP, it brings together national and international academics and historians.
