Mike Woods, the Canadian star of Israel Premier Tech, achieved today (Friday) the team’s premiere victory this season in the Gran Camino Tour in Spain – and he holds the yellow shirt as the race leader.
Woods, one of the most prominent climbers in the world, was the man who provided the goods last season as well and now he is doing it again and allowing the team to release a collective sigh of relief: in the first month of the racing season. The riders were close to victory at least half a dozen times, but were content with only the podiums in second or third place – but now the Canadian came and finished the wait.
Woods did today in the second stage of the race what he knows how to do best of all: dismantle his opponents with short but very sharp ascents. When this ascent comes to an end like today Woods knows how to close the story. The group worked for him all day to keep him fresh, leading him to the final ascent. His breakout left competitors in the dust and legendary Spanish rider Alejandro Wolverde from the legendary Moby Star team arrived 16 seconds long behind him.
