Libreville, August 2, 2024 (AGP) – WWF, in collaboration with the Central African Forest Commission (COMIFAC), organized, this Friday, August 2, 2024 in Akanda, a national workshop to discuss increasing international flows of climate and biodiversity finance for the Congo Basin forests.
How to attract more international funding to the Congo Basin? This is the question that biodiversity experts tried to answer during this workshop. The objective was to promote the appropriation of the COMIFAC-WWF Initiative by the countries of the Congo Basin and to reflect on the governance of climate and biodiversity funding for the forests of this region.
“Gabon’s efforts are not being rewarded at their true value. The funding expected after long negotiations has still not arrived,” stressed Nathalie Nyare, WWF national director.
For Auguste Ndouna, national coordinator of COMIFAC, the study will present different approaches enabling African countries to set up suitable financing mechanisms.
The workshop was opened by the Minister of Water and Forests, Brigadier General Maurice Ntossui Allogo, accompanied by his colleague from Public Accounts, Charles M’ba, and the national director of WWF.
As a reminder, the COMIFAC-WWF initiative stems from a study revealing that the Congo Basin receives very little international funding, with a funding rate of only 4%, much lower than that of other basins.
