People Power Party leader Han Dong-hoon nominated 4-term lawmaker Kim Sang-hoon (Daegu West) as the new policy committee chairman on the 2nd. This is a day after former policy committee chairman Jeong Cheom-sik, a key figure in the pro-Yoon faction (pro-Yoon Seok-yeol faction), resigned. Rep. Kim is a better candidate than floor leader Choo Kyung-ho (3rd term), who is pro-Yoon, and some are interpreting it as “a measure to check the pro-Yoon-centered floor leadership.”
Representative Han met with reporters that day and explained the reason for his appointment, saying, “I did not consider close ties. He did not run for me during the convention,” and “I received many recommendations that he is a stable person with outstanding policy skills.” Representative Han said, “I am grateful to former Chairman Chung for making the decision,” and told former Chairman Chung, “I told him that I will do good politics in accordance with the order of party members and the people to change.”
On this day, the pro-Yoon faction also publicly protested, saying, “Did we really have to go this far in pressuring former Chairman Chung to resign? There are many controversies within the party.” When asked about the pro-Yoon faction criticizing the new party leader for taking control of the party, Representative Han said, “That is not something that can be interpreted as the hawks say,” and “You can’t dismiss it as a conflict just because there are differences of opinion.”
Within the party, there is talk that “the intention is to enforce the ‘Han Dong-hoon style’ policy in the party-government relationship” as the positions of the policy committee chairman and floor leader have been reversed, which is different from previous customs. Rep. Kim, who has a light factionalism, is known as the ‘policy expert’ within the party. He passed the administrative examination and worked as a civil servant in Daegu before being elected in the 19th general election. He served as the chairman of the National Assembly Planning and Finance Committee in the 21st National Assembly. As all three party posts, including floor leader Chu (Dalseong, Daegu), secretary-general Suh Beom-soo (Ulsan, Ulju), and the policy committee chairman, are from Yeongnam, some are asking, “Yeongnam again?”
At the press conference, Rep. Kim stated regarding the ‘Third Party Recommendation Chae Sang-byeong Special Prosecutor Act’ proposed by Representative Han, “The premise of the Special Prosecutor Act is to be implemented when the ongoing investigation is completed and insufficient,” and “We need to reassess the situation.” In response, Representative Han said, “I said I would persuade the party, and their position has not changed.”
Rep. Kim will be confirmed and appointed at the general meeting of lawmakers next week. A re-elected lawmaker from Yeongnam said, “It will be difficult to veto Rep. Kim, who is in his fourth term.” However, criticism of former Chairman Chung’s resignation process as “‘minus politics’ that rejects pro-Yoon” continues. Rep. Kang Myeong-gu, who came from the presidential office, said, “For the party leader to cruise, he must not do anything that causes discord,” and “There can be no choice but to be dissatisfied now.” Former Chairman Chung did not attend the luncheon with Representative Han and the previous leadership that day.
The most likely candidate for the designated Supreme Council member is former Vice President of Organization Kim Jong-hyeok, a close ally. There is talk of the possibility of the reappointment of the current director, Hong Young-rim, as the director of the Yeouido Research Institute.
