In an effort to strengthen bilateral cooperation in environmental management and sustainable development, the authorities of Ecuador and Peru have signed an important declaration that includes 49 cooperation agreements. This achievement was reached during the Presidential Meeting and XV Binational Cabinet, held on July 4, 2024 in Lima, Peru.

The first Presidential Meeting and the First Binational Cabinet Meeting were held in Tumbes, Peru, on June 1, 2007, consolidating an annual mechanism for dialogue and cooperation between both nations. These periodic meetings seek to strengthen ties between Ecuador and Peru, in accordance with the Brasilia Agreements of 1998.

The recent meeting was attended by the President of the Republic of Ecuador, Daniel Noboa Azín, and the President of the Republic of Peru, Dina Ercilia Boluarte Zegarra. Several ministers of State from both countries also attended, including María Luisa Cruz, Vice Minister of Water of Ecuador representing Minister Sade Fritschi, and Juan Castro Vargas, Minister of Environment of Peru. Together, they analyzed mechanisms to strengthen environmental management and sustainable development between both countries.

Among the agreements reached, the importance of establishing a framework for cooperation for the joint management of protected areas stands out. This collaboration will include restoration programs, technical and scientific exchanges, and the active participation of local communities. This approach not only seeks to conserve shared biodiversity, but also to improve the well-being and economy of border communities.

Another important point was bilateral cooperation in the integrated management of transboundary watersheds. The strategies will focus on strengthening water resilience, mitigating the effects of climate change and promoting sustainable development. Actions will include joint monitoring of the environmental quality of the watersheds and the adoption of clean technologies in key sectors such as mining and agriculture.

The Ministry of Environment, Water and Ecological Transition of Ecuador reaffirmed its commitment to effective collaboration in these areas, which are essential to strengthening environmental protection and water security. These efforts contribute significantly to sustainable and equitable development in the region.
