He United States Senate passed a series of measures aimed at protecting children online, the first major legislation concerning the technology sector in the country in years.
This bill, dubbed the “Children’s Online Safety Act” (“Kids Online Safety Act” or KOSA, must now be approved in the House of Representativeswhere its validation is more uncertain and where legislators are on parliamentary vacation.
The text, supported in the Senate by Republican and Democratic legislators, requires technology platforms to establish provisions to protect minors from content problematic and dangerous, in particular the sexual exploitationonline harassment and the promotion of suicide.
It would also put limits on users’ ability to communicate with children via messaging and impose tighter parental controls.
