Chinese researchers have developed a Band-Aid-like biodegradable composite material that can promote full wound healing and skin growth, China Radio reported.

The study, jointly conducted by Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University and Wuhan University of Technology, was published in the International Journal of Biological Macromolecules.
The biocomposite material is made of silk fibroin, sodium alginate and other natural polymers. When applied to a wound, its micro-nano layered structure promotes overall skin repair and regeneration, said Wang Xinyu, a professor at Wuhan University of Technology.

This process results in the growth of natural skin, which differs from artificial skin and has normal sensory functions such as the sense of touch and the perception of pain. The material can be absorbed by the human body or excreted as amino acids, carbon dioxide and water.

The scientific breakthrough can be applied in the repair of skin and mucosal defects in the oral and maxillofacial region, as well as in the repair of skin defects caused by burns. Plaster will accelerate wound healing and address issues such as shortages of autologous skin graft materials and non-degradable repair materials.
