/ An American court announced on Wednesday that an Iraqi refugee who sought to bring in an ISIS assassination squad to kill former US President George W. Bush had been sentenced to more than 14 years in prison, according to the Washington Times.
Shihab Ahmed Shihab blamed Bush for the chaos that spread in Iraq after the 2003 US war in Iraq and the overthrow of Saddam Hussein.
Judge Michael Watson sentenced Shehab to 178 months in prison on Monday after he pleaded guilty to attempting to provide material support to terrorists.
The judge also ordered Shehab to face 15 years of supervised release, although he will likely be deported at the end of his sentence.
According to the newspaper, “Shehab’s case has highlighted the US immigration system, which is easily penetrated.”
Court documents reveal that the FBI is investigating a plot to “assassinate” former US President George W. Bush, linked to an Iraqi citizen residing in the United States, according to CNN, which reviewed the documents.
Prosecutors said Shihab entered the United States on a visa obtained from a corrupt official at the U.S. Embassy in Iraq.
Once there, he desperately sought to stay, applying for asylum and even trying to arrange a fake marriage.
“Shehab obtained forged divorce papers from his wife in Iraq to attempt a sham marriage,” the newspaper added.
