Update: This is what the weather will be like on the weekend of August 2-4, 2024 in Guatemala
Weather in Guatemala in August 2024: Increased rainfall and passage of between 8 and 9 waves from the East
According to Monthly Climate Outlook of the National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology —Insivumeh—the conditions of the Guatemala weather in August 2024 indicate an increase in rainfall towards the second half of the month.
The report details that from the second half of August, rainfall could increase slightly above average throughout the country. This increase is due, in part, to the end of the canicula, a period of less precipitation that generally occurs in July and early August. With the return of the rains, a more humid environment is expected.
Easterly waves, also known as tropical waves, and Sea Surface Temperature (SST) play a crucial role in this increase. A positive SST anomaly means that the water in the ocean is warmer, which increases evaporation and, therefore, moisture in the atmosphere. This phenomenon, combined with easterly waves, can result in increased rainfall. For August, the forecast is for the highest rainfall of 1,000 to 1,000 km/h. entry of between 8 and 9 waves from the east.
Temperature by region
As for temperatures, significant variations are expected throughout the country.
Average temperatures by region:
- Caribbean, Eastern Valleys, North, north of the Northern Transversal Strip, Bocacosta and Pacific between 22°C and 34°C.
- Central Altiplano and southern Northern Transversal Strip, average temperature between 14°C and 26°C
- In the West, average temperatures will be between 10° and 22°C.
Maximum temperatures by region
- Pacific, Bocacosta, Eastern Valleys and the Caribbean with maximum temperatures between 26°C and 38°C on average.
- North and Northern Transversal Strip between 26°C and 34°C.
- Central Altiplano with maximum temperatures between 18°C and 30°C.
- In the West, highs could be between 14°C and 30°C.
The effects of the dog days, characterised by less rain and clearer days, will continue to be felt for several weeks in August. This meteorological phenomenon causes an increase in temperatures due to greater direct solar radiation. This year, the dog days are expected to end during the second week of August.
Cyclone seasons
The Atlantic hurricane season is forecast to be more active than average. Between 17 and 25 storms are expected to form, of which between 8 and 13 could become hurricanes, and between 4 and 7 could become major hurricanes. As of July, three storms have already formed, including Hurricane Beryl.
In the Eastern Pacific, 15 to 18 storms are expected to form, with 3 to 4 of them potentially becoming major hurricanes. Two tropical storms have formed in this region so far, and 13 to 16 more are expected to develop during the remainder of the season.
