Inside the house
Secure shelves and bookcases firmly to the walls. Move tall furniture away from doors that could topple over and block exits.
Anchor the water heater and fuel and water tanks well to the walls.
Place heavy items on the lower shelves.
Remove heavy objects above beds and sofas.
Secure light fixtures and ceiling fans properly.
Identify well-protected areas in every room of the house:
under sturdy desks or tables; away from glass surfaces and bookcases; away from exterior walls.
Check the proper functioning of the electricity and natural gas supply networks.
Inform family members about how to turn off the main switches for electricity, water, and natural gas and about emergency phone numbers (112, 199, 166, 100, etc.).
Obtain a battery-operated portable radio, flashlight, and a first-aid kit.
Outside the house
Select a safe meeting area after the earthquake that is:
away from buildings and trees; away from telephone and electrical wires.
WHEN AN EARTHQUAKE OCCURS
If you are inside the house
Stay calm. Take cover under a sturdy piece of furniture (table, desk, bench), kneel, and hold onto its leg with your hands. If there is no sturdy furniture, kneel in the center of the room, reduce your height as much as possible, and protect your head and neck with your hands. Move away from large glass surfaces (windows, glass partitions) or furniture and objects that might injure you. Do not attempt to leave the house. Do not go out on the balcony.
If you are in a tall building
Stay away from glass and exterior walls. If you are in a recreational area, shopping mall, or large store,
stay calm. Remain in the area until the shaking stops. Do not be swept away by the panicked crowd rushing towards the exits, as you risk getting trampled. If you are in an open space, move away from areas under buildings, telephone, or electrical wires. If you have a bag or briefcase with you, cover your head with it.
If you are in a car
Seek refuge in an open space and carefully stop the car so that it does not obstruct traffic.
Avoid passing through tunnels, bridges, or above-ground crossings.
