She explained that “the deployment of the carrier Roosevelt to the region is of utmost strategic importance, as it serves several key purposes, including enhancing maritime security, providing critical support to operations, enhancing deterrence and stability, enabling rapid response operations, facilitating training, and enhancing partnership.”
“This deployment allows for joint training with allies and regional partners, enhancing interoperability and strengthening military-to-military relationships,” she added.
She stressed that “the CVN-71 carrier is home to a multi-purpose air wing, capable of carrying a variety of aircraft.”
She pointed out that “the aircraft hosted by the carrier are capable of handling a variety of missions, from air superiority and ground attack to reconnaissance and electronic warfare.”
“The carrier typically hosts a range of aircraft, including the F/A-18E Super Hornet, E-18G Growler electronic warfare aircraft, E-2D Hawkeye early warning aircraft, C-2A Greyhound cargo aircraft, MH-60SC Sea Hawk helicopter and F-35C Lightning II fighter, demonstrating the range of capabilities the Roosevelt can provide,” she said.
“The overall strength of the Roosevelt carrier ensures sustained effectiveness in the region, enabling the air wing to carry out a wide range of missions, including maintaining air superiority, supporting ground operations, and conducting electronic warfare and reconnaissance,” CENTCOM noted.
CENTCOM announced, “The landing of the F/A-18E Super Hornet fighter on the deck of the carrier Roosevelt, which was deployed to the US Central Command area of operations to support maritime security and stability.”
The New York Times revealed that “the transfer of additional US air forces is linked to the potential Iranian attack on Israel after the assassination of Haniyeh.”
The newspaper quoted an unnamed source as saying, “The United States is taking the ‘necessary measures’ to increase the combat readiness of its forces in the Middle East region,” noting that “the final approvals in this regard will come from the Pentagon.”
Pentagon Deputy Spokesperson Sabrina Singh announced that “US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin will lead the deployment of additional US forces to the Middle East to bolster Israel’s defenses.”
“The Secretary will lead a range of efforts to realign forces, enhance force protection across the Middle East, provide enhanced support for Israeli defense, and ensure the United States is prepared to respond to emerging crises,” she said at a press conference.
She added, “The deployment of additional military forces in the Middle East will mean an increase in the number of personnel, but a decision has not yet been made on the exact size of the specific units.”
The White House announced that US President Joe Biden discussed in a phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “the possibility of implementing a US ‘military defensive deployment’ to support Israel,” and Biden stressed “his commitment to defending Israel and the importance of ongoing efforts to calm growing tensions in the region.”
