“Broadcast at the time of 5.18, Gwangju citizens were called rioters, and the struggle was called a riot”
“Lee Jin-sook, Chun Doo-hwan’s scapegoat… Going back to that time”
“Yoon, only interested in maintaining power… Democratic Party will correct tyranny”
Park Chan-dae, the acting leader and floor leader of the Democratic Party of Korea who visited Gwangju, criticized on the 4th, “The control of broadcasting pursued by President Yoon Seok-yeol and the People Power Party is no different from going back to the days when May 18 was described as a riot.”
Park Geun-hye, the floor leader, said this while attending the joint speech of the Gwangju City Party at the 1st Democratic Party Regular National Party Member Convention held at the Kim Dae-jung Convention Center on the morning of that day, “In May 1980, when the citizens of Gwangju were bleeding and dying from the bullets of the martial law army, the broadcast portrayed the citizens of Gwangju as rioters and called their struggle a riot.”
He then claimed, “The reason Jin-sook Lee, who calls the May 18 Democratization Movement an ‘incident’ and Chun Doo-hwan a ‘scapegoat’, was appointed as the chairperson of the Korea Communications Commission proves this.”
Park said, “The fate of the Republic of Korea is like a light in the wind. Due to the tyranny of the Yoon Seok-yeol administration that ignores and betrays the people, the people’s lives are collapsing, democracy is suffocating, and the country is regressing.” He added, “Countless self-employed and small business owners are going out of business one after another, and ordinary people are having a hard time making ends meet due to skyrocketing prices, but the president is only interested in protecting his own power.”
In particular, he raised his voice, saying, “When the National Assembly passes a livelihood bill, they exercise their veto right without question and are turning the country into a mess,” and “The Democratic Party will fix this. We will save the livelihood economy and democracy that have been ruined by the tyranny of the Yoon administration, and we will stand tall for the pride, fairness, and justice of the Republic of Korea.”
He said, “Together with the newly elected leadership, I will complete a victorious party, a party centered on party members, and a competent people’s livelihood party together with my fellow party members and the people,” and asked, “Please join us in making this history of victory.”
Park visited the May 18th Democratic Cemetery at around 9 AM before attending the joint speech that day. Regarding the “inclusion of the May 18th spirit in the Constitution,” he said, “If there is difficulty in revising many parts together, there is no disagreement about including the May 18th spirit, which has received national consensus, in the Constitution, so I deeply agree with the idea of prioritizing it.”
