The legendary rock band Aerosmith has now announced that they are retiring as a live band and pulling out of their ongoing “Peace Out” farewell tour, which started in September 2023, where they had to postpone most dates after the 76-year-old singer Steven Tyler sustained a vocal cord injury during a show.
The band has now published the following statement, among other things via social media (translated from English): – “It was 1970 when a spark of inspiration turned into Aerosmith. Thanks to you, our Blue Army, the spark ignited a flame that has burned for over five decades. Some of you have been with us since the beginning, and all of you are the reason we created rock ‘n’ roll history. It has been the honor of our lives to have our music be a part of yours. In every single club, on every massive tour, and in big and private moments, you have given us a place in your ‘soundtrack’ to your lives. We have always wanted to amaze you when we perform. Steven’s voice is, as you know, a unique instrument. He has tirelessly spent many months trying to get his voice back to where it was before the injury. We have watched him struggle despite having the best medical team by his side. Unfortunately, it is clear that it is not possible to fully recover from the vocal injury. We have made a heartbreaking and difficult, but necessary, decision – as brothers in the band – to withdraw from the touring stage.”
“We are indescribably grateful to everyone who was excited to come along with us on the road one last time. Grateful for our expert team, our incredible crew, and the thousands of talented people who have made our historic runs possible. One last thank you to you – the best fans on planet Earth. Play our music loud, now and always. Dream on. You have realized our dreams.”
It is further informed that purchased tickets for remaining dates of the “Peace Out” tour will be refunded through Ticketmaster. If fans purchased tickets through a third-party vendor such as StubHub or SeatGeek, refunds will be available through that purchase location.
Since Aerosmith was founded over 50 years ago, the band has sold more than 150 million albums and produced genre-defining music videos for unique songs such as “Amazing”, “Crazy”, “Janie’s Got A Gun”, “Livin’ on The Edge”, “Love In An Elevator”, and “Mama Kin”.
With broad cultural influence, Aerosmith has prominently appeared in movies, TV shows, and video games, as well as influenced several generations of rock bands, both as style icons and recognized multi-instrumentalists. MusiCares honored the band in 2020 as Person of the Year for their many artistic achievements and commitment to philanthropy, including Steven Tyler’s initiative Janie’s Fund initiative, which supports young women who have suffered trauma from abuse and neglect.
Aerosmith was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001, and is associated with the most RIAA album certifications of any American band with 25 gold, 18 platinum, 12 multi-platinum, and one diamond. Since the band was founded in Boston in 1970, April 13th has been declared “Aerosmith Day” in Massachusetts by former governor William Weld.
Prior to the band’s 50th anniversary in 2021, Universal Music Group (UMG) announced that they became the home to the entire Aerosmith recorded music catalog, future new music releases, products, and audiovisual content. It was further informed that Aerosmith would release a collection of previously unreleased material from their personal archives. UMG will also be the home of future music projects, as well as work with the band to develop, produce, and distribute new film, TV, and other audiovisual content projects celebrating Aerosmith’s history and significant cultural impact. UMG also stated that they would work hand in hand with the band to continue introducing Aerosmith and their rich musical heritage to new generations of fans worldwide.
Aerosmith has performed twice in Norway. The first time at Oslo Spektrum on November 29, 1993, and the last time at Odderøya in Kristiansand on June 4, 2014.
