Italian tennis player is the current number 1 in the world
Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic will decide the tennis final at the Olympics this Sunday at the Philippe Chatrier Arena in the Roland Garros complex in Paris. Although they are internationally known as references in the sport, neither of the two players leads the ranking of the Olympic modality. The number 1 tennis player in the world currently is, in fact, Jannik Sinner from Italy.
Currently 22 years old, Sinner became the first Italian tennis player to reach the top of the ATP rankings. This achievement happened this season, specifically in France, during the Roland Garros stage when Novak Djokovic got injured and exited the competition. Without the chance for a title at this stage of the World Circuit, the Serbian was surpassed by his rival, who had dominated the previous stages.
In 2024, the player reached the peak of his career and has accumulated 42 wins against only four losses this year. This record allowed the Italian to win his first Grand Slam title after defeating Russian Daniil Medvedev, 3 sets to 2, in the final of the Australian Open this season.
Jannik Sinner was born in the town of San Candido, in the mountainous region of the Dolomites, in the Italian Alps. The proximity to the mountains led the athlete to split his attention between tennis and skiing during childhood. However, at the age of 13, the Italian decided that his future would be on the tennis courts.
The choice proved to be right a few years later. At just 18 years old, he entered the ranking of the top 100 tennis players in the world. By 20, he was already in the top 10, being seen as a great name in the sport and one of the main promises for the future of the sport alongside Spanish player Carlos Alcaraz.
